Your First Psychotherapy Session

What to Expect in Your Counseling Appointment

Are you about to go to a therapist for the first time? Whatever your reason for seeking professional assistance, you will be more at ease and get better results if you know what to expect.

In your first session, your counselor will ask certain questions about your life. This information will help him/her make an initial assessment of your situation. Some questions may include:

  • Why you sought counseling. A particular problem probably led you to seek assistance. The therapist has to understand your surface problems before he/she can get to the deeper issues.
  • Your current situation and personal history. The counselor will ask you a series of questions about your life. For example, he/she will ask you about your family history and your current situation because those play an important role in who you are.
  • Your symptoms. Other than knowing the reason you sought therapy, the counselor will attempt to find out if you are suffering from other symptoms. For instance, your anxiety might be causing difficulty at work.

The psychotherapy specialist will use this information to better understand your problems. And, while he/she may make a diagnosis at the end of the first visit, it is more likely that a diagnosis will take a few more sessions.

Psychotherapy is a team effort. If you do not take an active part in the session, you will not find the counseling experience valuable. To get the most out of the session be as open as possible, be prepared about what to expect, do not be afraid to ask questions, and be open about your feelings. Be sure to go for your appointment with realistic expectations. Therapy is not a quick fix for your problems, rather it is a process. With some effort on your part, it can be a successful tool toward resolving issues.
